Abstract:
Gemeinschaftsprojekt mit Universidad de Rio Grande del Sul, Porto Alegre, Brasilien, zum Austausch von Wissenschaftlern. Gemeinsam gefördert vom Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst (DAAD) und Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) im Rahmen des PROBRAL-Programms.

We wish to prepare new polymeric materials which are based on amphiphilic block and graft copolymers as well as amphiphilic nanoparticles. In selective solvents like water, such polymers have the ability to form different types of aggregates, i.e. star micelles, cylinder micelles, vesicles, or more complicated aggregates. Micelle solubilities and interactions with the environment are influenced by factors depending on the chemical and physical nature of the hydrophilic corona and the interaction of the hydrophobic core with the solvent (in the case of inverse micelles there is a hydrophobic corona and a hydrophilic core). The knowledge of aggregation mechanisms, influence of the preparation method and structure of the amphiphilic copolymers on the dynamical and structural characteristics of the aggregates is very important, because it allows the systematic variation of these parameters in order to obtain special materials for specific applications. These micellar systems are of great interest for the biological area due to the possibility of encapsulating or coupling bioactive substances (for example, drugs and DNA). The presence of densely packed functional groups on the micelles corona allows the immobilization of relatively large quantities of bioactive substances. This is a great advantage for using such nanostructures in the biological field.1 Due to their great stability the micelles are also ideal for other applications, including personal care products, stabilizers for pigments or in emulsion polymerization, crystal shape modifiers, nanoreactors for chemical syntheses, etc.
