Abstract:

Emulsion polymerization of different monomers has been carried out using Janus particles as stabilizers. This novel type of stabilizer uniquely combines Pickering effect and amphiphilicity and leads to extremely well-defined and stable latex dispersions. The Pickering emulsion polymerizations can be conducted in a facile fashion similar to conventional emulsion polymerization and do not require homogenization procedures very common for miniemulsion polymerization routes. Furthermore, it is found that only a few Janus beads are necessary on a latex particles surface to sufficiently stabilize the dispersion against coagulation.
