Abstract:

Chapter 1: Anionic Vinyl Polymerization

This chapter starts with an overview of the basic concepts of anionic polymerization of non-polar and polar vinyl monomers. We then discuss the important mechanism of the initiation and propagation steps, based on the structures of active species, where carbanions, various kinds of ion-pairs and their aggregates can coexist in a dynamic equilibrium. We point out that the position and the dynamics of these equilibria control the kinetics and molecular weight distribution of the polymers formed. A focus is set on recent developments in the control of the polymerization of polar monomers. Finally, we discuss some important scientific and industrial applications of anionic polymerization.
