Abstract:
This chapter presents an overview of ongoing research concerning phase behavior, microdomain dynamics and order in thin films of compositionally asymmetric block copolymers. Block copolymer properties and external parameters that affect thin film behavior are discussed topics ranging from molecular weight and architecture to surface energetics and film thickness. An emphasis is placed on comparing with lamella forming systems. Common problems preventing long range order such as structural defects and hindered dynamics in thin films are discussed. Future research opportunities regarding the control, optimization and functionalization of block copolymer microphases are identified.
