Abstract: Stimuli-responsive polymers respond with large property changes to small physical or chemical changes in their environment. They are usually classified as temperature-, pH-, ionic strength-, light-, electric-and magnetic field-sensitive. By combining monomers of different chemical functions and/or reactivity, copolymers responding to two or more stimuli can be created. In this category, water-soluble multi-responsive copolymers have taken an increasing importance because they combine the intrinsic properties of polyelectrolytes for instance, and those of stimuli-responsive compounds. Such copolymers can associate in aqueous solutions and form a wide variety of architectures. The applications of these new compounds are various and cover different fields in chemistry: biotechnological applications (drug carriers, enzyme immobilizations, polymer-protein conjugates etc.), but also for the stabilization of latex particles or the dispersion of pigments in paints. |
